The mentoring process centres around a monthly meeting, during which you and your mentor discuss a piece of work you have submitted in advance. You’ll also talk about your general progress, address any difficulties you’re experiencing, and go away enthused and energised for the next month’s writing. The process typically runs for 9-12 months, and works towards a specific target, such as finishing a draft of a novel.
“A must for anyone who is starting out on their first novel… Non-judgemental, positive and immensely enjoyable. I can honestly say that my writing improved after only one session!” – KM
A one-off meeting, or series of meetings, can help you through difficult stages of your writing: unravelling plot tangles, getting through a block, or testing out your ideas before launching into a major project.
“Andy provided the validation my crime plot needed as I hit the halfway mark… I still find the consultancy valuable, months later.” – SB
When you’ve finished a short story or novel, it helps to have an experienced professional read through it, and identify its strengths and areas for improvement. A Pow-Wow appraisal includes a line-by-line edit of your manuscript, a written report (usually 3-4 pages for a novel) giving an overview of areas such as plot, character, setting and dialogue, and an hour’s face-to-face or online consultancy to talk over the appraisal.
“Andy has the knowledge and ability to view your work as a reader, a potential agent and a publisher. He found 2 key problems with my style of writing, which would have limited my chances of publication, and suggested easily applied remedies. He also isolated the major plot weakness and again made suggestions for tackling this. At the one-to-one meeting, he gave me invaluable advice about the way forward and subsequently sent me some very useful links. Writing can often seem like a terrible chore, but after receiving Andy’s advice, I can’t wait to get scribbling again.” – RW
